England’s hopes of European Championship glory were dashed once again as Spain secured a 2-1 victory in the final in Berlin. The defeat marks a second consecutive Euros final loss for the Three Lions.
Dominant throughout the tournament, ‘Los Rojas’ were clear favourites going into the match. England, who had relied on late goals to reach the final, needed a top-performance to upset the odds. Opting for a defensive approach in the first half, England struggled to get into the game as Spain controlled possession comfortably.
Early in the second half, Nico Williams gave Spain the lead. England responded with substitutions, bringing on Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer, the latter equalising with a fine finish. However, Spain regained control and sealed the win through Mikel Oyarzabal.
Spain claimed their fourth European Championship title. Questions will undoubtedly be asked of England’s tactics and whether the team truly gelled. Gareth Southgate’s management style may come under scrutiny, and the future of captain Harry Kane as England’s main striker could also be debated. It could be that both are moved on or retained for one last tournament.
So we have to wait for England to finally win a major trophy again. What did you think of the final? You know the drill let us know if the comments below.
