Original Grime Kid
We chopped it up with The Movement – Yung R in an exclusive interview. The Grime rapper was born and raised in Croydon, South London. Making his mark on the UK urban music scene with his storytelling and sharp-witted lyrics. This guy is definitely building a portfolio of bigger and better things. Yung R is also a fully qualified English teacher. Educated to the nines!!!!
What first got you into music? I grew up hearing a variety of music genres and felt an affinity with Garage and Grime music. I started to practice writing and performing my own lyrics after attending a music workshop at school called the PYE project funded by Bromley Council and run by Emmanuel Imuere.
Who inspired you to make music?
I used to watch a lot of music videos growing up and was inspired by many artists and creatives. MTV Base, The Box and Channel U/AKA were very influential on me, particularly the latter. Artists such as Chipmunk and Griminal were very inspiring for me as they were only a few years older than me at the time and making a huge impact within Grime.
How would you describe the music that you typically create? I’m a Grime artist who is heavily influenced by other genres such as Garage, Rap, Reggae and Dancehall.
Who would you most like to collaborate with? There are many artists who I would like to work with in the future such as D Double E, Kano, Wiley, Ghetts, Skepta, P Money, Prez T, Chipmunk etc. Outside of Grime, I’d like to work with artists such as Craig David, Nas, Eve, Chris Brown, Popcaan, Burna Boy, Mahalia, Ella Mai, Summer Walker, J Hus, Mo Stack, Dappy, Nines, Skrapz, Ambush, Cashh, Alicai Harley, Angel, to name a few.
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
Music isn’t my only avenue. I’m an English teacher by profession and have my own proofreading and tutoring company: Proof-Reid®️.
What is your favourite song to perform? Lyrical Master is a fan favourite. I think the interactive element with the crowd gives it a different dynamic, especially live.
Which famous musicians do you admire? Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, Whitney Houston, Marvin Gaye, Amy Winehouse, and Lionel Richie, to name a few.
What is the best advice you’ve been given? The best advice I’ve ever been given is related to preparation. It is known as the five Ps: “proper preparation prevents poor performance.” I think it’s important to stay ready and to always be prepared for greatness. You never know when the opportunity you have been looking for will present itself, so you need to be ready at the time it appears otherwise you may miss your chance.
“proper preparation prevents poor performance.”
What’s next for you? To record and release some visual projects, to perform at bigger venues and to work on a new Grime project.
