Is This the End for Deontay Wilder? Another Loss Raises Concerns

Wilder
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Deontay Wilder’s boxing career appears in tatters after suffering another defeat, this time to China’s southpaw heavyweight Zhilei ‘Big Bang’ Zhang. The fight took place in Saudi Arabia as part of the 5 vs 5 Queensbury vs Matchroom boxing event. The Chinese heavyweight just had too much for Wilder and can now look forward to a rematch with Joseph Parker or other big names.

This loss follows his defeat to Joseph Parker, leaving many wondering what’s next for Wilder. Just four years ago, he was considered the “baddest man on the planet” with a devastating right hand and an undefeated record. However, things haven’t been the same since the epic trilogy of fights with Tyson Fury. Perhaps the first fight, which ended in a draw, took a toll.

The trilogy was undeniably grueling for both fighters, but Wilder seems to have been affected more. He appears to have lost some of his passion, fighting instinct, and the brash confidence that once defined him.

Wilder himself described this fight as his “last chance” in the build-up. It’s concerning why a boxer would make such a statement before a fight. It reveals self-doubt and doesn’t serve him well.

Given the brand he built and the rivalry with Anthony Joshua, his decline is quite severe. While AJ hasn’t faced the same grueling fights as Wilder with Fury, he’s also had setbacks and been open about his mental health struggles. Something seems off with Wilder, and I hope he gets his mental and physical well-being checked.

Walking away from the sport now, considering the lucrative opportunities in Saudi Arabia (rumoured to be ten times more than his previous Las Vegas fights), wouldn’t be the best decision.

While some might point to Wilder’s poor technique and lighter weight compared to other top-ranked heavyweights, boxing is a dangerous sport. While winning by knockout may seem fun and exciting when your ‘putting people to sleep’, constantly being on the receiving end can have long-term consequences. Maybe it’s time to prioritise his health and well-being, for himself and his family. He has earned a significant amount throughout his career, hopefully managed wisely, so financial security shouldn’t be the main concern.
