Skepta Hits The Silver Screen And Makes His Tribal Mark

Reading Time: < 1 minute

UK rap star Skepta has been keeping busy lately. Last year, we witnessed the successful launch of his fashion label “MAINS” during London Fashion Week. Despite controversy surrounding a popular magazine proclaiming him the Greatest MC in UK history in late 2023, Skepta ignored that noise and continued to focus on significant projects. He recently made his debut in the movie industry with the release of a short film titled “Tribal Mark” last Friday, marking the start of what appears to be a series of films.

The film centres on a hitman employed by a black secret service, portraying an anti-hero reminiscent of James Bond but with added complexity. Its narrative spans 24 minutes, focusing on Young Mark, an immigrant adjusting to life in London after moving from Nigeria with his mother. The role is brought to life by the promising talent Jude Carmichael, discovered through an open casting process by the filmmaking team.

As expected, the movie comes with a soundtrack. One track, “Jangrova,” featuring Skepta, ODUMODUBLVCK, and Idris Elba, who provided assistance to Skepta in the project, was released last week. The video for the track includes visuals from the movie and the filming process. Another release, the song “Diligent” (previously titled “Gas me Up”), features fellow British-Nigerian celebrity Clint 419, CEO of the streetwear brand Corteiz, in the video. Both in front of and behind the camera for “Tribal Mark,” Skepta employed a cast and production team comprising 90% minority ethnic members, aiming to unearth new talent and create career opportunities.

Currently, the film is exclusively available for viewing at Everyman Cinema, with the opportunity to purchase tickets and participate in a Q&A session afterwards. We will provide updates here regarding its general release.
