Ajax and the Three Little Birds Kit is a football and fashion collaboration between Ajax, a Dutch professional football club based in Amsterdam, and the Bob Marley family. The kit was released in 2021 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Bob Marley’s album “Exodus“.
The kit was about the Song “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley which has become Ajax’s adopted stadium anthem in recent years. A special version of the song was released as a single. There are also plenty of Bob Marley references in Amsterdam where Ajax are based. His music and art have been a feature around the city particularly in Restaurants and Coffee shops for decades.
The Ajax and the Three Little Birds Kit quickly ascended to become the club’s most popular and best-selling jersey, captivating not only football fans but also fashion enthusiasts worldwide. The jersey transcended its sporting purpose to become a cultural phenomenon, embraced by Bob Marley fans and music lovers alike. After the success of Arsenal’s pre-match kit which was launched in time for the Notting Hill carnival and Ajax 3rd Jersey Adidas had richly benefitted from Jamaican culture to boost their sales and get a dominant grip in the market of football jerseys. Now they were the official kit supplier for the Jamaica national team after signing a four-year deal, they had to come up with something special.
In 2022, Grace Wales Bonner‘s talent caught the attention of sports giant Adidas, who tapped her to design the home and away kits for the Jamaica National Football team. Bonner embraced this opportunity with open arms, recognising the chance to bring Jamaican culture to the global stage and premiered her designs at the Paris Fashion Show.
The kits, a fusion of classic Adidas silhouettes and Bonner’s signature style are a vibrant testament to Jamaican flair. Infused with vibrant colours that evoke the Jamaican flag and Grace Wales Bonner‘s signature style, this collection features both home and away kits, a training shirt, and a reversible jacket. The circular JFF logo prominently adorns the left chest, while the Adidas logo complements the design on the right. The home jersey boasts subtle pinstripes, a timeless touch reminiscent of classic football jerseys. The shorts have an interesting feature – pockets, suggestive of the intention to be worn with wider fashion as well as on the pitch.
